OmniLife Science Reaches a Milestone

Company reports more than 3,000 parients treated with its surgical navigation system.

OmniLife Science Inc. has reached a milestone. The privately held, East Taunton, Mass.-based orthopedic company reports the successful completion of more than 3,000 total knee replacements in the United States using it’s Apex Robotic Technology (A.R.T.) surgical navigation system.

A.R.T. uses a robotic cutting guide that is designed to support surgeons’ ability to make more accurate bone cuts and optimize the position of the implant versus conventional surgical navigation techniques, according to the company. The system uses Omni’s patented BoneMorphing technology to create a virtual 3-D model of each patient’s unique anatomy without preoperative CT or MRI imaging, to provide more precise positioning of the robotic cutting guide.

Company officials note that the A.R.T system addresses the key issues associated with earlier-generation navigation systems, serving the needs of a large and growing population suffering from knee pain due to osteoarthritis. Most robotic technologies used today for knee resurfacing procedures are only offered for uni-compartmental, or partial knee replacement. The A.R.T. system specifically is designed for total knee replacement, providing the precision of a robot on even the most significant knee joint deformities.

“After using a conventional navigation system for over six years for my total knee replacement procedures, I moved to a robot-assisted procedure using A.R.T.,” said Leonid Dabuzhsky, M.D., a physician at Quincy Medical Center in Massachusetts, who has used the system for total knee replacement patients for almost two years. “As much as conventional navigation improved the accuracy of my surgeries previously, it does not even come close to the level of precision I can achieve using A.R.T.”

George Cipolletti, CEO of Omni said there are “several” advantages to his company’s technology that set it apart from other robotic knee systems.

“The most important finding is that we are exceeding patients’ expectations, Cipolletti said. “In addition, the implants used with the A.R.T. procedure are designed and developed using the input of our independent, forward-thinking customers. This means the hospital, surgeon and patient benefit from a superior procedure as well as a superior product.”

In addition to its robotic technology, Omni also makes knee and hip reconstruction implants.

The company was founded in 1999.
